Curriculum

At Cherry Fold Community Primary School, our vision is to enrich the lives of our pupils through a challenging and aspirational curriculum that inspires excellence. We nurture happy, confident and resilient children, fostering a lifelong love of learning.

Values & Ethos

Our ethos is built around Enjoy, Respect and Succeed, ensuring pupils are safe, valued and develop the social and emotional skills needed to thrive. Using the National Curriculum as our stating point, we provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum enriched with wider experiences. Reading, writing and spoken language underpin all learning. The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils and their understanding of the core values of our society are woven through the curriculum.

Our Curriculum Approach

Subject leaders define the core knowledge, concepts and vocabulary of each subject. They sequence learning to support long-term retention and avoid overload. Teaching begins by activating prior knowledge, followed by explicit instruction, modelling and guided practice. Retrieval practice, questioning and scaffolding ensure access for all pupils while maintaining ambition.

Assessment is formative, ongoing and responsive. Summative assessments inform future planning. Baseline assessment is used for new arrivals to ensure gaps are addressed quickly.

Our Organisation

We deliver a carefully sequenced, broad and balanced curriculum. Core subjects receive strong focus, with foundation subjects taught through structured schemes adapted to pupils’ needs. Forest School, specialist teachers and enrichment opportunities strengthen implementation.

Additional whole school programmes and approaches support quality first teaching and learning. The school is well resourced with learning materials, books and technology e.g., VR headsets & Learning through Questions. We have achieved the Artsmark, Lancashire Equality Marks, Lancashire Behaviour Quality mark and the Primary Science Quality mark.

The Early Years Foundation Stage

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old. and is split into seven areas of learning. The first three are the Prime Areas as skills in these aspects underpin all other learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (Self-care, Self-regulation, Building Relationships)
  • Communication and Language (Listening, Attention and Understanding; Speaking)
  • Physical Development (Gross Motor Skills, Fine Motor Skills)
  • Literacy (Comprehension, Word Reading, Writing)
  • Mathematics (Numbers, Numerical Patterns)
  • Understanding the World (People, Culture and Communities, The Natural World, Past and Present)
  • Expressive Arts and Design (Creating with Materials; Being Imaginative and Expressive).

Exciting first-hand experiences, both child-initiated and adult-led, enable the children to develop knowledge, understanding and key skills in all areas of learning which provide a sound basis for later education.

English: We use the 'Lancashire Talk Programme' as the basis for our English sessions and each unit focuses on teaching English within carefully sequenced units of work including:

  • Vocabulary, spoken language, role play and drama, reading, modelled and independent response outcomes, writing - modelled and independent outcomes

Children in KS2 use Accelerated Reader to help select books which are suitable for their ability and awards are presented at key milestones.

Phonics: Our EYFS and KS1 phonics scheme is based on Little Wandle. Our reading books and resources are fully matched to the scheme.

Mathematics: We teach using a mastery approach; we follow the Red Rose Mastery Scheme from Reception to year 6 to secure fluency, representation and reasoning.

Science: We use PLAN to support our teaching, supplemented with materials from Oak Academy.

History:  We have developed our own History curriculum tailored to our school. Several units have been developed to take advantage of the history in our locality others utilize Kapow. Each unit of work has key knowledge and vocabulary and is based on an overall theme which is then broken down into key questions.

Geography: We have developed our own Geography curriculum tailored to our school and utilize Kapow. The teaching and learning is enhanced by the use of Oddizzi and Digimaps.

Computing: We use the 'iCompute' scheme of work.

RE: We use the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus.

French: We use Primary Languages Network in KS2.

PSHE: We use the Coram scheme of work.

Art: We use Kapow as our core scheme.

DT: We use Kapow as our core scheme.

Music: We use Kapow as our core scheme. We supplement the curriculum with lessons from a specialist teacher from Lancashire Music Service where they learn to play, compose and perform.

PE: We use the Lancashire PE scheme of work utilising the PE  Passport app.

Our Curriculum Design

Our curriculum is coherent, progressive and knowledge-rich. Sequencing ensures pupils build long-term understanding and can transfer knowledge across subjects. Milestones ensure ambition and progression. Content reflects local context, pupils’ lived experiences and meaningful real-world connections.

The curriculum includes enrichment such as exhibitions, performances, life-skills learning and community projects. Strong routines ensure predictability for pupils experiencing instability. Adaptation supports access without narrowing opportunity.

The outdoor environment, including our Forest School and the local community are considered an opportunity for active learning for all our pupils. The school grounds have been developed so they can enrich different curriculum areas, particularly science, physical education and literacy

Our curriculum provides academic stability and ambition within a context of disadvantage and mobility. Activities which develop life skills such as Debt Aware, First Aid Training and Positive Footprints enhance the learning experience in UKS2. Our curriculum ensures every child receives a coherent, high-quality education and prepares them for the next stage of their journey with confidence, aspiration and independence.
