PSHE Education overview

At Cherry Fold we have always placed a high value on Personal, Social, Emotional and Economic Education. We have always chosen to teach this subject. Relationships and Health Education is now statutory for all Primary School children. We teach all statutory elements through our PSHE provision and we also choose to teach non statutory elements.

Statutory Health Education is:

  • Mental wellbeing
  • Internet safety and harms
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Healthy eating
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • Health and prevention
  • Basic first aid
  • Changing adolescent body – This will include puberty. As part of non-statutory aspects we may choose to teach human reproduction. This may be statutory in Science Education.

Statutory Relationships Education is:

  • Families and people who care for me
  • Caring Friendships
  • Respectful relationships
  • Online relationships
  • Being safe

This will all be taught at a developmentally appropriate level and much of this has already been embedded in our PSHE provision. We will support our PSHE Education by using a resource called 'SCARF', this is a resource produced by Coram Life Education. If you would like a copy of the resources please ask your child's class teacher.

Below is a link for you to access the parent/carer section of the resources.

EYFS

In EYFS PSHE starts with Personal, Social and Emotional Development. This is a prime area and is a focus in the early years. PSED is split into 3 aspects; self regulation, managing self and building relationships.

In EYFS the children are working towards the early learning goals. These are assessed at the end of Reception.

Self-Regulation
• Show an understanding of their own feelings and those of others, and begin to
regulate their behaviour accordingly.
• Set and work towards simple goals, being able to wait for what they want and
control their immediate impulses when appropriate.
• Give focused attention to what the teacher says, responding appropriately even
when engaged in activity, and show an ability to follow instructions involving
several ideas or actions.

Managing Self
• Be confident to try new activities and show independence, resilience and
perseverance in the face of challenge.
• Explain the reasons for rules, know right from wrong and try to behave accordingly.
• Manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs, including dressing, going to
the toilet and understanding the importance of healthy food choices.

Building Relationships
• Work and play cooperatively and take turns with others.
• Form positive attachments to adults and friendships with peers.
• Show sensitivity to their own and to others’ needs.
